UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (AED) ARAB DIRHAM
The Arab Dirham is the official currency of the United Arab Emirates. Its
international currency code is AED and it is represented by an Arabic symbol
though unofficially it is also referred to as DH or Dhs. 100 fils make a dirham.
The Arab dirham was introduced in 1973 when it replaced the Qatar and Dubai
riyal.
Currently in circulation
Coins that are currently in circulation are in the denominations of 1, 5, 10, 25
and 50 fils and 1 dirham. Banknotes are available in the denominations of 5, 10,
20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 dirham. The texts on the notes are in Arabic on
the front, while the reverse is in English.
Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques
Most of the hotels provide foreign currency exchange facilities. Traveller’s
cheques are also widely accepted in the UAE but to avoid a service charge it is
advisable to carry travellers cheques in Us dollars or Pound Sterling.
Using credit/debit cards
The major credit cards are widely accepted in the UAE which include the American
Express, Diners Club, Visa and Mastercard.
Restrictions
There are no restrictions on the import or export of local or foreign currency
in the UAE.
