CROATIA (HRK) CROATIAN KUNA
The Kuna is the official currency of the country of Croatia. The international
currency code is HRK. The kuna is divided into 100 lipa. The name of this
currency derives from an old Croatian word which was representative of ‘marten
pelts’ which were used as an early form of trading.
Currently in circulation
The denominations of coins that are common in circulation are the 5, 10. 20 and
50 lipa and 1, 2 and 5 kuna. There are a few other coins that are rarely seen
and these are the 1 and 2 lipa and a 25 kuna coin. Banknotes are issued through
the Croatian National Bank and these are to the values of 10, 20, 50, 100 and
200 kuna. There are also 5, 500 and 1,000 kuna notes, but again, these are not
common.
Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques
Bureaux de change facilities are commonplace in the larger towns and cities and
especially in the most popular tourist areas. You will also be able to exchange
money in banks and some of the larger hotels, but do you check the commission
rates involved. Traveller’s cheques will be accepted in larger establishments in
the tourist centres and these are best presented in euros.
Using credit/debit cards
You should not encounter too many difficulties in using these cards for
purchases in the larger stores and for hotel bills. Smaller towns in Croatia may
pose a few more problems. ATM machines are available in a number of locations
for you to make cash withdrawals. Just verify the charges that you may be
required to pay beforehand.
Restrictions
There are restrictions on the amount of local currency you can bring into and
take out of Croatia which you need to be aware of. You are only permitted to
bring a maximum of HRK 2,000 into the country and only HRK 500 of this may be in
bank notes. You are only permitted to take a maximum of HRK 2,000 out of the
country. There are no restrictions on the amount of foreign currency coming in
or leaving the country.
Croatia: an overview
Croatia is re-establishing itself as a competitive and highly desirable tourist
destination once more. Many visitors are attracted by the resplendent delights
of the Dalmatian coast and the quintessential old-world charm of the small
Croatian towns and villages. The country is completely able to appeal to
anyone’s taste and once seen, this is a part of the Balkans that brings people
back year after year.
It may seem a little surprising but Croatia is not exactly the cheapest country
to visit. Indeed, food items are some 4% higher than in the UK, for example.
Transport costs are lower, however, and all-in-all Croatia would work out
cheaper on the majority of products compared to the UK.
