HONG KONG (HKD) HONG KONG DOLLAR
The Hong Kong dollar is the currency of Hong Kong and is referred to by the code
HKD. It is represented by the symbol ‘$’ or ‘HK$’ to differentiate it from the
other similar symbol using currencies. It is the world’s ninth most traded
currency.
Currently in circulation
Coins that are in circulation are in the denominations of 10¢, 20¢, 50¢ and $1,
$2, $5 and $10. Banknotes come in the denominations of $10, $20, $50, $100, $500
and $1000.
Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques
Hotels and bureaux de change offer you foreign exchange facilities but their
rates of exchange are very low. Banks offer the best exchange rate but also
charge a fee for a transaction. American Express banks give a lower exchange
rate but they do not charge a commission on American Express traveller’s
cheques. Traveller’s cheques can be easily exchanged at banks, hotels and
currency exchange offices. They fetch a better rate than cash. You will be
required to furnish your passport when cashing traveller’s cheques.
Using credit/debit cards
Credit cards are widely accepted by the hotels, restaurants and stores but some
of the smaller ones prefer cash and do not accept cards. There are numerous
ATM’s available throughout Hong Kong making a credit or debit card the most
feasible option for procuring cash. However, the withdrawal fee for making
international transactions is quite steep.
Restrictions
There are no restrictions whatsoever as to the amount of local or foreign
currency that can be taken in or out of the country.
Hong Kong: An overview
Hong Kong is a splendid blend of both Western and Eastern cultures with its
colonial past reflecting on its Chinese population. It is a country that
presents a multitude of tourist attractions and a rich cultural heritage and
therefore it has been given the name ‘Pearl of the Orient’. There are a number
of exceptional temples and monasteries devoted to Buddhism and Taoism. Hong Kong
also has some very delightful culinary treats to feed the appetite of food
lovers.
Hong Kong is a very expensive country putting it at one of the highest ranks in
the world as concerns the standards of living. A meal for two at a mid-range
restaurant could cost you HK$500/$64/£45/Є51 to HK$800/$103/£72/Є82. Drinks are
also quite costly with a beer costing you a good HK$387/$50/£35/Є39 and above.
