Bulgaria (BGN) Bulgarian LEV
The Lev which means ‘lion’ is the currency of Bulgaria. A lev is made up of 100
stotinki. The currency code is BGN and the symbol following a numeric value is ‘лв’.
It had been anticipated that Bulgaria would join the league of Euro-using
nations but the present global crisis has delayed its plans until 2015.
Currently in circulation
Coins are available in the denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 stotinki and
1 lev. Banknotes come in the denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 lev
notes.
Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques
There are a number of exchange bureaux in Bulgaria that generally exchange all
major currencies. It is advisable to check the exchange rates before you make a
transaction and try to exchange currencies in either banks or in large hotels.
Traveller’s cheques can also be cashed here and more major currencies (e.g. US
dollars) may be preferable.
Using credit/debit cards
There is a large network of ATM’s that cater to major international credit and
debit cards. As Bulgaria still depends widely on cash transactions, credit cards
are not accepted everywhere. However, they can be used at the chief hotels,
restaurants and large shopping centres.
Restrictions
If you intend to leave or enter the country with foreign exchange equivalent to
or exceeding 8000 Lev, you must declare the amount at the customs. And if you
wish to export foreign currency, for any amount equivalent to or over 25,000
Lev, you must be able to furnish the required documents.
Bulgaria: An overview
A small scenic country, Bulgaria has been in existence for the last thirteen
centuries with reminiscence of its ancient civilisations and its glorious
history. The country has vast areas still untouched, giving you more scope to
discover the wonders of the luscious mountains and the forested landscape.
Getting around the country is easy as there is an efficient transport service
and the charges are also very low.
A single-room in a budget hotel will cost you around 20 lev/£7/$11 while a
double-room will cost 40 lev/£14/$21. A medium range hotel will cost you
approximately 40 lev/£14/$21 for a single room and 60 lev/£21/$32 for a
double-room. You can buy a simple meal for something as low as 3 lev/£1/$2 while
a main course even at a more exclusive restaurant will not cost you more than 15
lev/£5/$8.
