MOROCCO (MAD) MOROCCAN DIRHAM
The Dirham is the official currency of Morocco and its code is MAD. 100 sentimat
(santim in singular) make a dirham. It is also the currency of the de facto
country of Western Sahara.
Currently in circulation
Coins in circulation are in the denominations of 1 santim, 5, 10, 20 santimat, ½
dirham, 1, 2, 5, and 10 dirhams. Banknotes are available in the denominations of
10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 dirhams.
Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques
Bureaux de change facilities are available at the airports, some of the larger
hotels and most of the banks. At some of these places you may require your
passport to make the transaction. Some of the souvenir shops in tourist areas
may accept euros but it is always wise to carry dirhams with you. Traveller’s
cheques are very difficult to cash even in banks.
Using credit/debit cards
Major credit cards are accepted but with a 5% surcharge. However, a bulk of
goods and services are paid for in cash. Credit cards can get you cash advances
but with an unbelievably high transaction fee. Most of the key cities have ATM’s
but it is safest to withdraw at the bank itself.
Restrictions
The import and export of Moroccan currency is firmly forbidden and cannot be
converted outside Morocco. On the other hand, there is no limit to the amount of
foreign currency that you can import into the country. Any foreign currency can
be changed to dirhams on the production of an exchange permit.
Morocco: An overview
Morocco is an intoxicating country in the midst of the vast Sahara desert. The
majestic cities of Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat and Fes are cities of tremendous
variety. The astounding landscape, the hustle and bustle and aromas that pervade
the medinas of Fes and Marrakech are exceptional. The mountains and the
mud-brick kasbahs leave one bewildered.
Morocco is by and large an inexpensive country as compared to western standards.
Moroccans generally bargain over prices and expect others to do so too. A good
hotel in Marrakech would cost you between 1627dirhams/£132/$189/Є150 to
5422dirhams/£440/$629/Є500 for a double room per night. Traditional dinners at
good Moroccan restaurants in the Medina would cost around 430dirhams/£35/$50/Є39
to 517dirhams/£42/$60/Є47 per person. Beer, wine and alcohol are not freely sold
as Morocco is a Muslim country and Muslims cannot get a license to sell them.
Alcoholic beverages are only sold by Christians or Jews but even they are not
allowed to display them at the window freely.
