Slovakia (SKK) Slovakian Koruna
The Slovak Koruna (code: SKK) or the Slovak crown was the currency of Slovakia
until 31st December 2008. Being a part of the EU, it has adopted the Euro from
1st January 2009 but the Slovak koruna is still in circulation until the Euro
takes over completely by the end of 2010. A Slovak Koruna is made up of a 100
haliere and is followed by the symbols ‘sk’ or ‘h’ after the numeric value.
Currently in circulation
The coins in circulation are in the denominations 50 haliere and 1, 2, 5 and 10
korunas. Banknotes are available in the denominations of 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000
and 5000 koruna.
Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques
The preferred way of converting foreign exchange in Slovakia is via foreign
exchange offices of which you will find plenty. This gives you the opportunity
to compare the exchange rates before you cash the amount. Apart from this you
can exchange foreign currencies at airports, railway stations and shopping
centres. As for traveller’s cheques, Thomas Cook, American Express, Visa, Swiss
Bankers and Citybank traveller’s cheques are accepted in banks and exchange
offices. But tourists are advised to carry cheques only in Euros, Pound Sterling
or US Dollars.
Using credit/debit cards
The use of credit and debit cards is commonplace in Slovakia and all major
credit cards are accepted here. You can also acquire funds from debit cards
through the ATM’s linked to international banking networks.
Restrictions
The import and export of both local and foreign currencies is limited, with the
amount not exceeding 150,000 korunas. You must declare the amount that is being
brought in or taken out of the country.
Slovakia: An overview
Slovakia is fast becoming one of the centres of tourist attraction in Europe.
The beautiful countryside with its fascinating landscape, reasonable expenses
and warm people is definitely an eye-catcher.
The cost of living in Slovakia is significantly lower than the other European
countries. A three-course meal along with beer or wine can be bought for under
£10/$15. Local transportation is very cheap with a one-day pass which is valid
on all kinds of transport costing you a bare £1.
