SOUTH AFRICA (ZAR) SOUTH AFRICAN RAND
The Rand is the currency of South Africa and gets its name from ‘witwatersrand’
the ridge upon which Johannesburg is built and where most of the gold deposits
were discovered. It is represented by the symbol ‘R’ and is divided into 100
cents shown by the symbol ‘c’. The international currency code is ZAR.
Currently in circulation
Coins used are in the denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and Rand 1, 2 and
5. Banknotes currently in circulation are Rand 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200.
Exchange facilities and traveller’s cheques
There are several banks, bureaux de change, airports, main railway stations and
hotels that exchange foreign currency. You may need to furnish your
identification; therefore it is advisable to carry your passport with you. Banks
give a better rate but charge a service fee besides which their working hours
are generally shorter than the others.
Traveller’s cheques are accepted at banks, hotels, and restaurants and also to
pay for some of the tourist based activities. It would be sensible to carry
travellers cheques in Pound Sterling or US Dollars so as to save on additional
charges. Banks offer a better rate for traveller’s cheques than they do for cash
exchange.
Using credit/debit cards
Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners are the widely accepted credit
cards but Visa and Mastercard are the preferred choice. Most of the hotels,
restaurants, shops and even game reserves and national parks accept credit
cards. ATM’s are scattered all through the towns and cities, shopping malls and
petrol stations with each accepting both international credit and debit cards.
Restrictions
You are not allowed to take more than R5000 in cash in or out of the country. As
for foreign currency there is no restriction on the amount that you can import
or export out of the country.
